SUMMARY

In 2017, Governor Brown signed SB 1 (Beall): The Road Repair and Recovery Act. SB 1 increased the gas tax, vehicle registration fees, and diesel excise tax. The measure was put in place to help fund the over $73 billion in unmet funding needs for local streets and roads as well as the $72 billion backlog to the State Highway System. Proposition 69 is a constitutional amendment that will be submitted to Californian voters during the June 2018 election. This constitutional amendment will restrict the ability of the State legislature to divert SB1 funding for other non-transportation purposes.
